Sustainable Hydrogen Energy Australia Pty Ltd (SHEA) is a Western Australian company specialising in research and development of large-scale geologic underground storage of hydrogen (UGHS) to support and enhance the objective of hydrogen export and domestic use, geothermal as well as carbon capture and storage opportunities.
The company is engaging and working collaboratively with industry, government and the community to achieve shared goals of the technical and commercial confirmation of the feasibility of UGHS, with the aim of moving to a demonstration plant by 2025, and ultimately leading to a commercial facility in Western Australia by the early 2030’s to support the WA Government’s hydrogen initiative.
SHEA is forward-looking and outcomes focused, aiming to raise awareness of the economic, environmental and social benefits of the hydrogen industry in Western Australia and across the country.

In 2020, the co-founders and co-principals of Sustainable Hydrogen Energy Australia Pty Ltd (SHEA) discussed the concept of large-scale storage of hydrogen in Western Australia as a component of the transition strategy to renewables and implementing the initiative to support and elevate the WA Government’s Vision “to be a significant producer, exporter and user of renewable hydrogen.”
As a result of initial discussions, the co-founders and co-principals of SHEA founded the company and commenced pre-concept discussions as well as prefeasibility studies. The company is engaging and working collaboratively with industry, government and the community to achieve shared goals of the technical and commercial confirmation of the feasibility of UGHS, with the aim of moving to a demonstration plant by 2025, and ultimately leading to a commercial facility in Western Australia by the early 2030’s to support the WA Government’s hydrogen initiative.
A proud Western Australian company, the SHEA team is forward-looking and outcomes focused, aiming to raise awareness of the economic, environmental and social benefits of future energies including renewable hydrogen industry in WA and across the country. In line with the State Governments strategic focus areas around renewable hydrogen of export, remote applications, hydrogen blending in natural gas networks and transport, the SHEA team have the expertise, understanding and capability to deliver a commercial facility for large-scale hydrogen storage to ensure WA is primed to be a major exporter of renewable hydrogen.
Both co-founders and co-principals are passionate and innovate in sourcing solution-based measures to ensure continuity of business and good working relations, along with technical expertise. With extensive experience both locally and internationally – both are firm believers of seeking options for our future with a combination of city-based solutions, and rural and regional based applications – this is especially the case for future energies, renewable hydrogen and large-scale storage solutions. Although SHEA is currently operates as a young company, the co-founders and co-principals bring together over 55 years of solid, broad and applicable experience.
The current governance of SHEA is 50% women, with the SHEA team dedicated to diversity, opportunity and inclusivity as the company matures and grow.
Ms. Rooney built a professional career spanning Australia, UK, France and Singapore and is passionate about a renewable future where reduce, reuse, recycle are the common themes.

Mr. Ellis brings over 35 years’ operator experience in technical and management roles, primarily in the upstream oil and gas industry and is now transferring this knowledge over to assist in the transition of a renewable future.
